Mary Gorrell Jones, Founder

Following her breast cancer diagnosis in 2003, Mary Gorrell Jones created the Alight Initiative to provide adequate resources so others diagnosed with breast cancer could be better informed about treatment options and what to expect. In addition, she wanted to make sure each patient and their family had a support network to help them through the difficult times ahead. Mary's desire was to help ease the fear, panic, and disbelief of new patients so they could focus on the business of healing.

Who We Are

Melinda Madtes, Chairman of the Board

Welcome to Alight!

If you are a family member, friend, a survivor, a newly diagnosed breast cancer patient or supporter, we are here for you. As a six year breast cancer survivor, I know the importance of the educational, financial and emotional resources that Alight provides. To the generous donors and volunteers that allow Alight to provide services and resources to breast cancer patients, please accept my sincerest gratitude and appreciation. I am honored to be the 2013-14 chair of the Alight Foundation. It is a privilege to serve those who are taking the breast cancer journey -- they are friends, neighbors, co-workers, and family members.

Best wishes for a happy healthy future,

Melinda Madtes

Melissa Vogelsinger, Executive Director

I am so grateful you have made it to our website. If you're a newly diagnosed patient, then you have come to the right place! I want to assure you that calling our office for support is a positive step on the path to recovery. I encourage you to reach out to us; both my assistant, Jill Berry, and I are breast cancer survivors and we are here to help. We've been where you are now and we are here to share our knowledge.

If you are a breast cancer survivor and would like to give back to the cancer community, then we would love to hear from you too! We hold peer mentor training quarterly and are always looking for positive role models to walk this journey with the newly diagnosed.

If you are interested in becoming an Alight volunteer or fundraiser, or have an event you'd like to discuss with us, then we would be thrilled to get your call. We are always interested in opportunities to share our mission in the community as well as raise funds for our programming.

Lastly, but so very importantly -- if you are a community member who would like to become a donor or corporate partner and want to hear more about how we touch the lives of every single breast cancer patient in the Cone Health Cancer Center, please contact me to schedule a meeting. I would love the opportunity to share our story with you.

Six years after my own stage III breast cancer journey, I am forever mindful of what a privilege and blessing it is to have one-on-one contact with newly diagnosed patients to help ease the cancer burden. Alight Foundation is an extraordinary place and I'm thankful for the support of a community that recognizes the good work we do. We appreciate your gifts in whatever form they come, and we thank you for stopping by our website.

History

The concept of a local breast cancer support organization grew out of a vision shared between Mary and her radiologist Dr. Gilda Cardenosa. Mary was touched by the exceptional compassion and care Dr. Cardenosa offered her patients and her great concern for those facing financial challenges. With the help of like-minded friends, buy-in, collaborations, and partnerships, Alight was established as a 501(c)(3) non-profit in 2005 and launched its first program of work.

Significant to the successful start-up of Alight were the relationships developed with the medical professionals, Moses Cone Health System, UNCG's School of Health and Human Performance, and The Junior League of Greensboro. In addition to Mary, the first Alight Board of Directors included members: David Johnston, CPA; Dave Perrin, PhD, UNCG; Ashley Wall, community advocate; and Cristin Flynt, PhD, who served as Executive Director.
